Abstract:
The saga novel Kinfolk: A Novel of China by Pearl S. Buck, which resembles A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, describes the paradoxes of cultural identity and cultural identification in Mr. Liang and his eldest son's case. Although attached to ancient Chinese culture and norms, Liang Wenhua migrated to the United States to avoid unrest and chaos in China despite his addiction and commitment to traditional culture and civilization of China, while his eldest son, James, who is deeply influenced by American culture, returns to and settles down in China out of his innate love for motherland, venturing pioneering work but ironically becoming an alien and outsider in his hometown. Pearl S. Buck unfolds the father and the son's respective tortuous progress of the construction of cultural identity from the perspective of cross-cultural communication, offering a glimpse of the effect of Pearl S. Buck's cross-cultural identity on her literary creation.
