The Tang Dynasty Chinese translators in Nagasaki, Japan in the late Shogunate period were a group of enterprising, talented and outstanding Chinese descendants. They had great foresight and advanced with the times to be the first to learn English so as to give full play of their intelligence in Japanese diplomacy and other fields. They mainly acted as translators and clerks in the late Shogunate period and early Meiji period and left a deep imprint in the history of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations. As inheritors of Chinese culture, even though they had done something beneficial, they still unwittingly became accomplices of Japanese militarism in most cases in that particular historical era.
