- Abstract:

After making a rough statistic survey of institutional translations of contemporary Chinese women writers since 1979, this paper looks closely into the ways institutional translation has filtered contemporary women literature and reconstructed female identity through the selection and exclusion of writers and their works. Analyses are also made to address the positive effects institutional translations of contemporary Chinese Women writers may have in helping to construct a positive national image. Thus, institutional translation of contemporary Chinese women writers is taken here as a political act of self-constructing a more favorable national image against the one-sided construction of a less desirable Chinese national image by the west.
