- “小子”一词在商周时期的甲骨文、金文以及早期的传世文献中使用频率很高，学术界对其含义的理解也是众说纷纭。总体上来说，在不同的时代、不同的语言环境中，其具体内涵差异很大，主要有谦称、小宗之长、门人子弟以及职官等方面的含义。随着时代的发展，其早期的含义逐渐消亡，一些新的含义随之产生。
- Abstract:
- The term Xiao-zi was often found in the inscriptions on bones or tortoise and ancient bronze objects, and its meaning is still in dispute in the academia. Generally, the meaning of Xiao-zi varies in different times and context. It may mean a modest appellation, the patriarch of a small clan, a follower or a title of government official. With time going by, the early meanings of Xiao-zi gradually disappeared, but new meanings were produced.
