In The Merchant of Venice, the only English character,Baron Falconbridge is mocked by Portia for his strange luxury dressing. This seemingly insignificant episode can be reckoned as Shakespeare’s response to the discourse about clothing and consumption in Early Modern England, conveying his alert on the conspicuous clothing consumption.Meanwhile,Shakespeare translates his worry about the economic crisis of English woolen clothing industry at the end of the 16th century into a series of metaphors related with wool in the play.
