历史上的汀州地处福建西部，是客家文化的发源地。它开发于唐开元年间，至明清时期，在经济、文化、艺术等方面得到空前发展，成为闽、粤、赣三省边区的商贸重镇及客家文化中心之一。清康熙至乾隆年间，闽西汀州八县涌现出一批颇有建树的画家，其中以上官周、华喦和黄慎最为杰出，被称为 “闽西三杰”。汀州画家根植于福建传统，开拓进取，敢于创新，把闽画推向了一个新的历史高度，在清代中国绘画史上也应有其特殊的地位。
Abstract:
Located in the west of Fujian Province in history, Tingzhou, as the birthplace of Hakka culture, was first developed during Kaiyuan years of the Tang Dynasty, and, up to the Ming and Qing dynasties, had obtained an unprecedented development in such aspects as economy, culture, and art, thus becoming a trade center in the border area of Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangxi Provinces as well as one of the centers of the Hakka culture. During Kangxi and Qianlong years of the Qing Dynasty, in the eight counties of Tingzhou there sprang up quite a few prominent painters, three of whom, known as “the three outstanding painters in Western Fujian”, were Shangguan Zhou, Hua Yan and Huang Shen. Setting their foot on Fujian traditional painting, with pioneering spirit and innovation, these Tingzhou painters successfully pushed Fujian painting to a new historical height and therefore should have their special status in Chinese painting in the Qing Dynasty.
